90s TV Shows: Saved by the bell

Saved by the bell is an American television sitcom that aired on NBC from 1989 to 1993. A reboot of the Disney Channel series Good Morning, Miss Bliss, the show follows a group of friends and their principle. The show revolves around Teens in the High School environment and back in the 90's most High Schools did not have a uniform so the students were able to be themselves and express themselves through the use of fashion.

My reason being for researching the show is not only that the show comes from the era I am focusing on but that so many trends have made there way from the 90's to now, and "Saved by the bell" is one of many shows that have made a huge impact in 90's fashion as well as the trends of today. We are seeing a lot of "90's trends" getting recycled today. Nineties trends such as floral pants, leopard print clothing, flannel shirts, denim and so many more. Trends I've noticed in the show that I believe strongly are making their way back are scrunchy's! The females of this show always had them in there hair it was a way of being stylish by applying material to the hair, instead of many of today's just use a regular bobble which you are unable to see and creates a plain style where as adding a scrunchy adds that little something extra. The highlight of this show that really contrasts today's trends are the outrageous prints and messy hair. Along with double denim, the denim phase has never completely died out it usually re-appears in summer and with the use of double denim of today its usually the case of a denim jacket with a bold under top and skinny denim jeans which I have found to be a big trend of today. I have noticed that most trends of the 90's today are known as "vintage" but in my eyes I don't feel as if they ever went for them to be known as vintage.

Marc Jacobs: 90s Grunge Collection Perry Ellis

First pages for my research of the Marc Jacobs Collection.

For my secondary research I decided to bring my attention to a designer from the nineties, one in particular I thought was perfect for what I was looking at is Marc Jacobs a designer who still is today very popular in the design industry. This collection of clothing was designed for Perry Ellis and focused on the style of "grunge" which I am starting to narrow my project towards as I feel that the style is making its way back into fashion as well as influencing myself. The "Grunge" style was based around the music scene and made a huge impact globally. The style itself in my eyes evolved from the events that a cured when entering the nineties, things because more laid back and less stressful more individuals where able to be themselves and express through fashion. The style is comfortable, edgy, quirky and different! The collection itself is like no other its not a stereotypical high end fashion design, I feel that from my own knowledge and understanding of todays fashion I believe that the collection is more for a High street fashion rather than the high end. To me it looks more casual and as the collection is dedicated to the style grunge, it is known to be more comfortable clothing and creates an edgy appearance to those who choose to dress in that manner. What I like about Jacobs work is that he has not only contrasted with the stereotypical High end fashion look but he pushes the boundaries of fashion and how something should look. I believe that Jacob shows through his designs that there should be no limitations or boundaries on who should wear what. I in particular like how the clothes are displayed on a plain white background when photographed, enabling the clothing to speak for itself.

Second pages of my Marc Jacobs: Grunge collection displaying
my critical studies of the work.
For recreating these photographs I did organise to take photographs at a charity catwalk event involving the fashion students at the electric theater unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to the lack of funding towards the event. However, I was able to think around this unfortunate event taking place by relocating myself into the photography studio over exposing light onto a white back ground. I then placed the model directly half way between the backdrop and myself whilst taking the images creating a realistic pose that the model is walking towards myself, linking it back to the runway scenery. However, whilst creating my critical studies no matter how much I increased the power of the soft boxes I used the images just didn't seem to have the same over exposed look, so theoretically if I was to do another shoot after taking the photographs I could maybe go further by editing them on photoshop and increasing either the brightness, levels or curves giving it more of an exposed look.

My Artist research sheet for Marc Jacobs collection "Grunge"
involving more critical studies.

From this research I know for definite that I am going to take elements forward with me such as the style grunge. I believe I can take this forward as I am willing to push the boundaries of what grunge looked like back in the nineties and reveal how grunge is portrayed in today's society. I plan to also take elements of the clothing forward such as doc martins, flannel shirts and the comfy clothing. Furthermore, I love the idea of the over exposed white background for a future photoshoot and how the focal point is the clothing as well as the model, and that there is nothing in the background diverting the attention of the viewer.

90s TV Shows: Friends

Image result for rachel from friends in overalls
Prime example of denim worn well
Friends is an american sitcom, which aired in September 22, 1994, to May 6, 2004. Starring Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlance, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. The show revolves around six 20-30 aged friends living in Manhattan. As the show itself involved the age range of 20 to 30, it made it obvious that the age range would be the same for the audience/viewers. The characters themselves had there own different personalities which was shown through their fashion sense. Each individual character were different to one another.

Starting with "Rachel" known for being the girl next door in the show, to whom influenced many females around the 90s as well as today's era. When thinking of 90s fashion today I straight away think of rachel from friends. Rachel taught the audience of friends how to accessorize through the use of wearing necklaces and chokers. The 90s were the glory days for denim and Rachel really did know how to wear it well. Also throughout the show Rachel becomes an assistant for the Designer "Ralph Lauren". Rachel was and still is to this date the fashion icon for the 90s.

monica geller's style:
Still fashionable like Rachel but more sophisticated
Moving onto the bestfriend of Rachels ,"Monica" known for being the mother of the group who's style is very classic and elegant. Monica's look was more sophisticated than Rachel's as she was seen as a leader type which gave us as the audience a high quality expectation from Monica. People who appreciate sophistication style are often socialites or want to be one.

Phoebe being known as the quirky friend of the group. She was also a musician that performed locally at "Central Perk", this inpacted on her style creating a bohemian style (hippy). The bohemian style is characterized with artistic interests like arty style and free spirit. However, the difference is that Bohemian style focuses on some exotic patterns and textures. The free spirit Bohemian draws inspirations from the gypsy look with their intricate patterns, peasant blouses, multiple accessories and much more. Phoebes style is very non traditional and is very out there for the 90s.

90s TV Shows: The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air rap:

After starting my survey I decided to go further with my research and start to research 90s TV shows as I felt that TV shows, movies and the music industry influence the public's fashion choice and how they dress. Popular TV shows such as "The fresh prince of bel air", "Friends" and "Saved by the bell".

Fresh prince of bel air is an american sitcom that was first ever aired in September 1990 and went on to air for 6 years and sadly came to an end to the series. The show stars the incredible actor Will Smith who plays a fictionalised version of himself, a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia who is sent to live with his wealthy Aunt and Uncle in their Bel Air mansion after getting into a fight on a local basketball court. The Fresh prince of bel air outfits stuck pretty close to the young, bright, eccentric, and colourful styles Will smith rocked as a rapper. Fresh prince Will was always seen in colour: from pastels to bright bold colours. He also rocked patterned pieces, mostly sticking to geometric patterns and abstract, arty pants. The clothing worn by Will on the show reflected the 90s massively. He often wore windbreakers (type of jacket), parachute pants (a style of trousers characterized by the use of nylon, especially ripstop nylon), and stone washed denim.

Today, you can see hints of Will Smiths 90s style in the clothes worn by many pop culture figures. One of many being Tyler, the creator's style incorporating Will's bright eye catching colours, hats with flat peaks, pattern outerwear, and more.

This is a good outfit and pose for a Front cover of CP in my magazine. I also like the colour scheme and colours used.:

GOLF fall/winter 2015:

My researching pages dedicated to Fresh prince of bel air.
For my research in my sketchbook I decided to start off with attracting my attention to TV programme's of the nineties, Fresh prince of bel air being one of them. By looking at programme's the main idea was to get an inspiration and idea of what was worn in the nineties and how I could take this research forward. So to get myself started I found photographs of the show using pinterest particularly photographs that show the clothes off. Looking at the show I was also able to see styles and trends accruing throughout the images. Styles such as street and upperclass sophisticated look. The trends I noticed are denim, bright and colourful shirts and many more. However, I feel that shows such as this one made an impact on fashion as a whole this being because all celebrities, programmes and many more make a huge influence on people. For instance programmes, you may look up to a character and feel like you relate to there situation or personality therefore they make an impact on you and you start to dress similar to them.

Theoretically, If i was to do a photo shoot regarding this show I could picture a male teen as the model placed in front of a wall covered with graffiti, dressed in street wear similar to will smiths character or I could do a contrast shoot where the its half and half, half street and half sophisticated upper class look.

Progression

After a stressful and tiring half term, I then was able to concentrate on finishing my proposal which was a great success and was carefully checked by my tutor so that it was to the level and standard that I plan to achieve which is either a merit or distinction. After finishing my proposal I then begun my sketchbook and started to think of how I should begin to get myself going with the project. So I took some advice from my last project "mother and child" and began with a survey aiming at individuals born in either the 70s, 80s or 90s and getting them to answer questions such as "What were the popular trends in these era's?", "What do you remember?", "What do you remember wearing?" and so many more. From this I knew it would help my further research and provide myself with some knowledge and understanding of what those era's were like.

Half Term

During half term, unfortunately I wasn't able to produce the amount of work I expected to be done for when I arrived back to college or finish my project proposal due to myself having to work full time at my part time job. From having to work long shifts and coming home ridiculously late at night I was unable to even attempt to start any sketchbook work or finish my proposal sadly. But when I return to college I plan to put my head down to succeed in finishing my proposal to the standard it should be at and start my research in my sketchbook.
